The state shares its borders with Himachal Pradesh to the west, Tibet Autonomous Region of China to the north, Nepal to the east, and the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh to the south.

It is often divided into two distinct regions: the Garhwal region in the west and the Kumaon region in the east, each with its own cultural and geographical characteristics.
