Holy Place Haridwar

Haridwar, a city in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, is a place steeped in ancient history and mythology. It is one of the seven holiest places in Hinduism and holds great significance in Hindu religious and spiritual traditions. The name "Haridwar" itself means "Gateway to God" (Hari - God, Dwar - Gateway). Here is an ancient story associated with Haridwar.

The Legend of King Bhagirath and the Ganga River

One of the most famous legends associated with Haridwar is the story of King Bhagirath's penance to bring the sacred river Ganga (Ganges) to the Earth.

According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagirath was a great king of the ancient Suryavanshi dynasty. He ruled over a kingdom where his ancestors had been cursed, leading to their ashes being trapped in a curse. Bhagirath was determined to liberate their souls, and to do so, he performed intense penance and sought the help of Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe.

Pleased with Bhagirath's devotion, Lord Brahma granted him a boon. Bhagirath requested that the sacred river Ganga descend from the heavens to Earth to wash away the sins of his ancestors and purify their souls. However, the powerful force of the Ganga was capable of causing immense destruction when it descended to Earth.

To prevent this, Lord Brahma advised Bhagirath to seek the help of Lord Shiva, as only Shiva could control the mighty flow of the Ganga with his matted locks. Bhagirath then embarked on another period of rigorous penance to please Lord Shiva.

Lord Shiva, pleased with Bhagirath's devotion, agreed to bear the weight of the Ganga on his head. He released the river from his hair, allowing it to flow gently onto the Earth, thus preventing the destruction that could have been caused by the river's descent.

The place where the Ganga touched the Earth became known as Haridwar, and it is believed that taking a dip in the holy Ganga at Haridwar can cleanse one's sins and lead to spiritual purification.

The story of King Bhagirath and the descent of the Ganga River is a significant part of the mythology and history of Haridwar. Pilgrims from all over India and the world visit this sacred city to take part in the Ganga Aarti (ritual worship of the Ganges), seek blessings, and immerse themselves in the spiritual and historical heritage of Haridwar.

Kumbh Mela:

Haridwar, in Uttarakhand, hosts the Kumbh Mela, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world. Pilgrims from all over the country come to bathe in the holy Ganges River during this event.
